It all began in 1978 when Mona & Walter Babcock—restaurateurs and visionaries—traded lima beans for vines and planted roots in the western Santa Ynez Valley. With just 20 acres and a love for wine, they took a leap. No reds yet—just Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. But big things were coming.
From UC Davis to the Crush Pad
Their son Bryan jumped in, trading thesis papers for grape-stained hands. He joined the family business full-time, fueled by passion and supported by Santa Barbara’s pioneering winemakers. By 1984, Babcock wines were hitting the market—and a star was born.
Crafting the Sta. Rita Hills Legacy
Fast forward a few decades—Bryan helped define the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, now home to over 60 vineyards. Babcock Winery went from a lone trailblazer to part of a vibrant wine community crafting world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and more.
From Farming to Forward Thinking
Vineyard life isn’t always easy. Bryan replanted after battling Phylloxera. Then came Pierce’s disease, shrinking 80 acres down to just one. But instead of stepping back, he looked forward.
Today, Babcock’s vineyard is a living lab of “Integrated Nature,” where vines grow in harmony with the land. Bryan is also pioneering “Agristhetics”—treating farmland as art. With over 1,000 oak trees planted, butterfly habitats blooming, and dreams of shaded parking beneath ancient trees, this is sustainability with soul.
