Road Trip Through the Santa Ynez Valley, California

Santa Ynez Valley

Road Trip

A Road Trip through the Santa Ynez Valley, California, is the perfect way to slow down and enjoy California’s Central Coast charm. Just about a half-hour drive from Santa Barbara, our valley is a convenient getaway from L.A. and surrounding areas. But the road trip doesn’t end once you arrive.

You see, the Santa Ynez Valley is actually made up of six separate little towns. We’ve got a perfect mini road trip weekend planned that covers them all. From Danish pastries to barbecue, local wine to boutique inns, every stop offers something unique. Here’s your guide.

Road Trip Through the Santa Ynez Valley, California, downtown SolvangDowntown Solvang, California

First Stop: Solvang

Start your trip in Solvang, a Danish-style village filled with charm, history and freshly baked pastries. The largest of our tiny towns, Solvang feels like a step into Europe, but with plenty of California sunshine.

Walk along Mission Drive and explore shops with wooden shoes, chocolates and Scandinavian goods. Count the windmills and thatched roofs as you browse little shops, galleries and museums. Be sure to make time for a stop at Solvang Restaurant for Aebleskiver, a local favorite for breakfast. What was once a beloved Christmas treat in Denmark has become a year-round favorite in Solvang. The name translates to “apple slices”, a nod to their original filling of apple. Over time, the filling was phased out, giving us the fluffy, round æbleskiver we enjoy today.

Second Stop: Buellton

Just a few minutes down the road is Buellton, known for bold craft beer and oak-grilled  barbecue. Start with a visit to Firestone Walker Brewing Co.’s Barrelworks, where you’ll find fresh pours and a lively taproom. Try Firestone’s signature 805 beer for something light, or Barrelworks’ special barrel-aged sours, strong ales and more. Barrelworks is recognized as one of the craft beer industry’s most influential wild ale programs.

When you’re ready for lunch, head to The Hitching Post II. Traditionally open for dinner, this steakhouse is a local icon, made famous by the movie Sideways. They now offer lunch at their adjacent tasting room, where you can also enjoy their award winning Highliner Pinot Noir. Order the tri-tip. It’s grilled over red oak and served with traditional Santa Maria sides. You won’t leave hungry.

Third Stop: Santa Ynez

Make an afternoon stop in Santa Ynez, a small town with a Western feel and elevated dining and wineries. Indulge in a tasting at Carr Winery, specializing in limited production wines. Key varietals include Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.

For dinner, head to SY Kitchen, one of our valley’s most popular and beloved restaurants. Be sure to secure a reservation for their fresh Italian food made from seasonal ingredients, and don’t skip the cocktails. We highly recommend sitting on the patio, with cozy heaters and blankets.

Fourth Stop: Ballard

When it’s time to wind down, head to Ballard, the smallest of all our communities. Book a night at the Ballard Inn, a peaceful 4-star boutique inn surrounded by oak trees and vineyards. With just 15 rooms, this exclusive inn has exceptional amenities like in-room fireplaces and wide bay windows.The-Ballard-Inn - Road Trip Through the Santa Ynez Valley, CaliforniaThe Ballard Inn in Ballard, California

In the morning, start by fueling up at renowned Bob’s Well Bread Bakery, with their Ballard storefront conveniently located across from The Ballard Inn. Check what’s on the daily specials menu, but rest assured there is no wrong order. We love the Egg-in-a-Frame options. And before you leave Ballard, be sure to snap a pic of the Little Red Schoolhouse, built in 1882.

Fifth Stop: Los Olivos

Los Olivos is all about wine, art and laid-back country charm. Designed around a historic downtown and stagecoach stop, the community is exceptionally walkable. There are dozens of wineries in a few blocks. We recommend a stop at Dragonette Cellars, producing exclusive, small lot wines.Wine tasting at Dragonette Cellars in Los Olivos, Road Trip Through the Santa Ynez Valley, CaliforniaWine tasting at Dragonette Cellars in Los Olivos, California

Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring shops and galleries around the town square. You’ll find paintings, ceramics, and photography—all created by local artists. It’s a great place to pick up a unique gift or just wander and enjoy.

Final Stop: Los Alamos

End your road trip in Los Alamos, a quirky Western town with big culinary talent. Hit the antique and thrift shops around town until you’re ready for a drink.

Then stop at Bodega Los Alamos, a unique wine and beer garden with a curated shop up front. In the backyard area, follow your nose to the Priedite BBQ trailer. This Texas-style smokehouse has ribs, brisket, burgers and housemade pickles that have been wowing locals and roadtrippers alike.
