Welcome to the Sta. Rita Hills Winegrowers Alliance!

We’re proud to call this land home—where ancient geology meets world-class wine. Over 20 million years ago, the ocean floor gave rise to rolling hills and a unique east-west valley. The result? A rare microclimate that’s perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

It all started with a dream. In 1971, Sanford & Benedict planted the first vineyard. By 1997, a passionate group of wine pioneers—led by Wes Hagen, Richard Sanford, Bryan Babcock, and Rick Longoria—banded together. They studied soils, checked maps, and hiked the hills, gathering everything they needed to define this special region.

Their hard work paid off. In 2001, the Sta. Rita Hills earned official AVA status.

Today, the Sta. Rita Hills AVA spans 30,720 acres, with 3,000 acres planted to vine. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive here, along with 18 other cool-climate grapes. Sixty vineyards and wineries call this place home, each with a story to share and a wine to pour.

Our boundaries were drawn with care. The AVA stretches between the Santa Rosa Hills and Purisima Hills, from just west of Buellton to just east of Lompoc. It’s one of California’s smallest AVAs—but mighty in character.

Come explore the valley. Taste the history in every glass. Join us in celebrating a region unlike any other!
