Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society & Museum
Preserving Our Past for the Future
Founded in 1961 by dedicated local residents, the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society exists to preserve and share the rich history of the region—from the Chumash people through early ranching life in the 20th century. What began as a single room has grown into a museum complex surrounding a beautiful courtyard, featuring fascinating exhibits and one of the finest carriage collections in the country.
Exhibits & Collections
The Historical Museum offers a glimpse into life in the Valley across centuries, while the Parks-Janeway Carriage House showcases over 36 authentic horse-drawn vehicles, wagons, and stagecoaches, along with a prized collection of Western saddles, bridles, and tack.
The Ellen Gleason Memorial Library, open for reference use, houses nearly 1,000 rare and historical volumes, along with maps, oral histories, legal documents, and photographs focused on Santa Ynez Valley and California history.
Support & Membership
The Museum is a nonprofit organization that relies on members, donors, and volunteers to maintain its collections and educational efforts. Becoming a member helps ensure that future generations can explore and appreciate the Valley’s unique heritage.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are the heart of the Museum—serving as docents, greeters, event helpers, and exhibit assistants. Whether you’re passionate about history or simply looking to give back, there’s a role for you.
