Brothers Restaurant, led by chefs and brothers Matt and Jeff Nichols, is rooted in a shared passion for cooking, community, and hospitality. Raised in Iowa, the brothers brought their appreciation for fresh food and family-centered meals to Solvang, California, opening their first restaurant in 1996. Their journey in fine dining took them to the historic Mattei’s Tavern in 2002, and in 2013, they opened Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez.
Deeply involved in the daily operations, Matt and Jeff are proud stewards of the iconic Red Barn, a building rich in local history. Their restaurant reflects their values—warm hospitality, honest food, and a commitment to creating a space that feels like home.
The Red Barn’s inviting interior was thoughtfully restored with help from local artisans. From rustic wood beams and fireplaces to handcrafted chandeliers and salvaged wallpaper art, every detail pays homage to the building’s past as a gathering place for ranchers and families since the early 1900s. Guests can enjoy an open-display kitchen, regional wines, and personalized service in a space that blends vintage charm with refined comfort.
Originally a private home, the Red Barn became a beloved restaurant under Lloyd and Clara Borkman for 50 years. Today, Matt and Jeff continue that legacy, crafting memorable meals and honoring the traditions of Santa Ynez Valley.
