Charles Lister “Lighthearted Dark Mess”
Santa Ynez-based artist Charles Lister’s meticulously crafted drawings invite us into a world that is perplexing yet oddly familiar. The power of Lister’s work lies in this tension—seemingly contradictory modalities coexist: whimsical and macabre, innocent and sinister, lighthearted and dark. In the words of the artist:
“What you see is a lighthearted dark mess: a place where complicated, distraught entities exist in their own hell, yet each carries a glimmer of hope. We’re all walking paradoxes in this third-dimensional reality, a matrix of contradictions. Words fail to capture the depth of it. Describing it can feel like an injustice. But there is grace in the unraveling. There’s a way to recentre ourselves by letting our messes be baptized in the unseen, where God and eternity meet the playful wonder of a child’s heart.”
Indah Gallery is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm-5pm.
