- Participating Museums in the Santa Ynez Valley
Explore the rich cultural offerings of the Valley for FREE on March 7. Visit five participating museums, each offering unique activities, on Free Museum Day! Participants include: Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum & Carriage House (Santa Ynez), Elverhoj Museum of History and Art (Solvang), Wildling Museum (Solvang), Old Mission Santa Ines Museum (Solvang) and Hans Christian Andersen Museum (Solvang).
Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, located at 1624 Elverhoy Way, 2 blocks south of the village center in Solvang, will offer interactive activities for all ages from 10 am to 5 pm. Meet a Viking woman from 1,000 years ago, enjoy living history demonstrations, and stop by the kid’s craft station. On display in the art gallery is Ro Snell: Outside In. Old Mission Santa Inés Museum, located at 1760 Mission Drive in Solvang, will be open 9:00 am-5:00 pm. Founded in 1804 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, the 19th in the chain of 21 Missions throughout California, Mission Santa Inés proudly possesses a collection of paintings, statuary, vestments, manuscripts, and artifacts used in and around the Mission throughout its history. Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Carriage House will be open from 10 am to 5:00 pm at 3596 Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez. Visit the current stagecoach exhibition “Rolling through the West” and display of historic 1890’s women’s fashion titled “The Golden Age of California: Women’s City Fashion of the 1890’s”. The Wildling Museum , where art and nature meet, will offer families a chance to meet live opossums that have been rescued by Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a free screening of the Disney film “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” at 3 p.m. On view in the first floor gallery will be Wild Spirit: Horses in Art , and Selections from our Permanent Collection is available on the 2nd floor gallery. Hans Christian Andersen Museum C. Andersen (1805-1875), as he is known in his native Denmark, is considered the “father of the modern fairy tale.” The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Snow Queen are favorites among his more than 150 tales. The museum, filled to the rafters with copies of Andersen’s books, sketches, silhouettes and memorabilia, is housed in a second story garret above The Book Loft, 1680 Mission Drive in Solvang.
